How to Rescue a Failed Thanksgiving Headband Craft

Updated: Nov 24, 2023

I will not mention store names, but a certain popular hobby store had this Thanksgiving headband for sale. I heard some women talk about how badly it was designed, and intrigued, I investigated the matter. I was not disappointed.

What is going on here? Let us look at the details. I do not know of anyone who cuts pumpkin pie with a blunt point. I am sure if someone cut pie like that at a family dinner, they would be in trouble. I appreciate that an attempt was made to add dimension to the slices, but this stuffing inside of the pie slices is not getting the job done very well. Obviously, the white cotton ball-like sparkly things represent whipped cream, although I am not sure how depicting it in this manner makes sense. What is with the bird feathers across the headband?

It is just so bad. It’s so bad, it’s good. I love looking at it for a laugh. I think we can take this good craft that was executed poorly and make our own version for some Thanksgiving fun. Join me in rescuing this failed Thanksgiving headband craft and making mother-daughter headbands or headbands for all the siblings to wear at Thanksgiving. Everyone in the family can make their own headband as a quality family time event as well.

Supplies You Need

To Wrap Headband:

2 1-inch pieces of fall decorative ribbon (3/8 inches wide)

60 inches of fall decorative ribbon (3/8 inches wide or larger)

Headband (I used scünci brand. A smooth headband would probably be best, but I used one with teeth on the underside, and I was able to wrap the ribbon around it smoothly)

Scissors

Glue gun/glue sticks

To Make Pie Pieces:

2 pieces of tan felt (3 ½ by 2 ¾ inches)

2 semicircles of orange felt (1 circular piece of felt 5 ½ inches diameter cut in half).

2 cloud-shaped pieces of white felt (cut from a 1 ½ inch square of felt)

2 tan pipe cleaners

To Attach the Pieces:

1 rectangular piece of tan felt (3 ¼ by 5 ½ inches)

2 tan pipe cleaners

Wrapping the headband

Take 2 1-inch pieces of 3/8-inch decorative ribbon. Wrap a piece around each end of the headbands to cover the tips.

Cut 60 inches of ribbon (for the 3/8-inch ribbon; you will need less for wider ribbon) to wrap around the headband.

Starting at one end, glue the ribbon at an angle over the ribbon glued over the tip. Fold over the excess ribbon and glue it to the inside of the band.

How to start wrapping the end of the headband

Continue wrapping the ribbon around the headband. I found it easiest to hold the headband in my left hand with one end on the table while using my right hand to put a dot of glue on the inside of the band resting against the table and then using my right hand to pull the ribbon tightly down on the glue. Wrap the ribbon so it touches the side of the previously wrapped ribbon. Do not overlay the ribbon any more than you need to, as it will be lumpy instead of smooth against your head. Apply glue to the inside of the band so glue does not show on the outside of the band. Wrap the ribbon tightly.

Continue wrapping the ribbon

Continue to put a dot of glue down on the inside of the band, pulling the ribbon tightly and pressing the ribbon down on the glue. I found it helpful to glue down the ribbon every time I wrapped it around the headband to ensure that it stayed tightly in place.

Do not stress too much about the ribbon looking perfect. It just adds some flair. I give you permission just to have fun making it and not worry too much about it being wrapped like a professional headband wrapper custom-made it. It is your creation, and it is awesome.

Continue until the ribbon is wrapped all the way around the band. Glue the end to the inside of the band so it matches the other side.

Making the pie pieces

If you cannot find something to trace for a circle shape, use a ruler to mark the center of the circle at 2 ¾ inches, then move the ruler and continue to mark 2 ¾ inches from the center until you have marked the outline of a circle to cut.

Take one of the semicircles and fold the right side over so it forms the point of the pie slice in the center.

Bring the left side up and over so it does the same thing. Make sure the point is…pointy…and then glue the left flap down.

Take a pipe cleaner and fold it in half and then in half again. Glue it along the top of the long edge of the tan felt.

Roll tightly and glue down, leaving some excess felt to glue to the back of the pie slice.

Crimp the pipe cleaner so it looks like a wavy, decorative pie crust. Make your grandmother proud. I found it looked better to crimp waves vertically instead of in and out from the pie slice. Bend the pipe cleaner in the middle of the crust and make a bend on each side. Now bend the crust slightly so it will be arched to fit around the curved part of the pie slice.

Glue the crust to the top and back of the slice. Roll the crust up and over the slice and glue it down. Flatten, bend, and adjust the materials as needed. Glue the ends of the crust shut for a more finished look. Trim excess tan felt with scissors.

Glue the whipped cream (cloud-shaped white felt) on top of the pie. If you have excess glue near the crust, you can attempt to hide it with the white felt.

Repeat these steps for the other pie slice.

Making the support for the pie slices

Take a pipe cleaner, fold it in half, then in half again.

Pinch the side with the sharp ends together and wrap them around the headband slightly to the left of the top of the band.

Repeat with another pipe cleaner and position it slightly to the right of the top center of the band. A good method is positioning the pipe cleaner in front of the band, wrapping the end under and back up on the front to secure it tightly. Keep the length of the pipe cleaners as flat as possible.

Apply glue generously to the tops of the pipe cleaners and position the pie slices on top. Try to keep the pipe cleaners from being too close to the edges of the pie pieces. One edge of each slice should be against the band so that it is horizontal to the floor when wearing it.

Cut 2 pieces of triangular tan felt from the rectangle to glue to the back of the slices. These pieces cover the pipe cleaners and make the slices more stable on the headband.

Adjust the spacing and angle of the slices, ensuring the band will rest as flat as possible against your head.
